Hadn’t heard this song for years. Australian I think from the seventies? Female singing-“gonna give you all the good things that you wanted, gonna feel it like you never felt before, gonna give you all the good things that you wanted, believe me baby you’ll be back for more.” Takes me back to my younger days. Can you help. Thanks, Kelly.

    • John on November 11, 2010 at 10:00 am

      Kelly,
The song is “All The Good Things” by Brisband Carol Lloyd Band. From the album, Mother Was Asleep At The Time. This bans was the follow on from Railroad Gin. The album is about to be rereleased. Search Railroad Gin in Facebook and there is a fan site with photos and videos.
      Cheers John

  7. Clint on November 11, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Looking for a song that I thought was called The Whale Song, but no info online. It is quite possibly a traditional sea shanty that was redone, and included on a hits compilation that I think came out around 1970 – 72, with a brown cover and photo’s of artists included. The only thing I remember for sure is the repeated ‘chorus’ of ‘Di di di, di di di di, di’ hahah.

    • Mark Gibson on November 11, 2010 at 9:17 pm

      Hi Clint,
I checked on the APRA website but there were a million listings for “Whale Song”. Check it out & see if one of the performers names rings a bell for you.

      • David on November 19, 2010 at 8:05 pm

There was definitely a song called the whale song I have a feeling it was a duo and one of the names I think was Dyer.

        • GeeTee on November 22, 2010 at 9:24 am

Yes I remember that song too. A bit of googling revealed that The Whale song was released in 1972 by Terry Fielding and Fred Dyer. Lyrics here: http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiTHEWHALE.html

          • Mark Gibson on November 22, 2010 at 10:07 am

Brilliant GeeTee, thanks so much. I actually remember the song now that I’ve seen the lyrics.

            Thanks again, Mark

I don’t know if this helps or is the same song.
There was one whaling song I head back in the 70’s and I remember a few words that went something like this.

Bend ya backs and row me lads and take me to my whale for tonight we sail and tomorrow night we will dance.

    • Paul on July 16, 2023 at 11:09 pm

It could be The Whale by Fielding and Dwyer.

  8. Clay Gaunson on November 24, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Further to the enquiry re The Whale by Fielding & Dyer, it is also available on ‘A Decade Of Classic Australian Hits’ 3CD set, its showing as still available.

          • Konrad Craig on October 3, 2017 at 6:59 am

Louise was my first bought single by local Adelaide Band , James Wright. I bought it in 1970 and still have the single.
Something about the song and the 1970’s depicts Adelaide and listening to the top 40 on 5KA and 5AD.
It transports me all the way back. It reminds me of going to the City Baths, now the site of the Festival Theatre.
            Remember that?

          • Wozza on October 3, 2017 at 9:26 am

Hi Cassie. I am sure a few of us would be interested in knowing anything about what your dad and the other band members have done music wise since the band finished up. When I listen to the voice of James Wright I liken it to Doug Parkinson. Excellent sound. Did you get into a band seeing music is clearly in your blood. Cheers Wozza

  17. Frank on December 7, 2011 at 7:16 pm

I heard a Duet in the early 70″s Which combined the lyrics of “Words of love so soft and tender cant win a girls heart anymore” by the Mama and Papas and “Words all i have is words” by the Bee Gees The duet may have been sung by Jackie Trent & Tony Hatch but I cant find it on their discographies, It may have been at a concert but i did hear it on the radio

    • Slider on December 15, 2011 at 9:19 am

Words of love by the Mamas and the Papas

Words of love, so soft and tender
      Won’t win a girl’s heart anymore
If you love her then you must send her
Somewhere where she’s never been before
Worn out phrases and longing gazes
Won’t get you where you want to go

If you go to the ultimate guitar site and do a search you will find words and music also you can listen to the song.
      Cheers

This has been bugging me for yearsand everyone thinks I made it up. Lyrics are:
When the door did open, there to my surprise, stood a sweet young girl with golden hair and a twinkle in her eye. She said Hey Mister, can you tell me please the time of day? Hey Mister won’t you listen to the things I say? Hey Mister, won’t you take me down the way you been; I’ve been sixteen years in this old back yard don’t wanna see this place again…. he said he was in the war; he never came back to see us so Mama had an open door.

    • Kez on February 24, 2013 at 5:45 pm

I BELIEVE YOU! I remember the lyrics you have written AND I can sing it but for the life of me I can’t think who sang it. Sorry!

      • JJ on January 4, 2016 at 2:11 am

        Hey Kez,
It’s been nearly three years since you posted saying you remember these lyrics (and thanks for believing me!)
Any more memory of the title/artist since then? It’s still driving me crazy!

        • pbg on January 7, 2016 at 4:46 pm

JJ, I stumbled on this comment while trying to find who sang the song myself. It’s had me stumped since the late 70’s when it popped back into my head and I thought, who sang that?

Now this may be a case of things becoming confused in the mists of time but I swear I remember hearing the song on Happening 70 / 71 and it was an Aussie band that had possibly returned from overseas?

Surely somebody must know the song title or artist.

          • JJ on January 29, 2016 at 8:38 pm

PBG, I am so relieved that now there are two of you (you and Kez) who recall something of this song. I believe you are correct about it being an Aussie band who had spent time OS and I do believe I heard it on the same show. I have spent hours googling Aussie bands who spent time overseas but there are so many from that era. I don’t know who to ask next. Thank you for your comment…at least I know I’m not totally crazy but will be if I don’t find out in the next decade!

    • Brian Pounsett on July 27, 2016 at 6:10 pm

it was a song by Australian band the Flying Circus

      • Brian Pounsett on July 28, 2016 at 1:33 am

the song was called Giselle by Flying Circusand came out in 1970 it was on the B side of single Israel the song is on youtube

        • PBG on July 28, 2016 at 10:25 am

Thank you so much for that Brian… you could not believe how much I appreciate your resolving this which has bugged me for close to 40 years. I had always wondered if it was Flying Circus (thought it was an Aussie band that had returned from overseas and had a country twang) but fully expected the song to have a title like “Hey Mister”, not “Giselle”. Clicking on YouTube link now. cheers!

          • Brian Pounsett on July 29, 2016 at 2:53 pm

no worries, people say i am a bit of guru on Aussie music, as I just seem to remember lots of trivia in that era, just happen to stubble over this site and read your text, and other worries sing out!

        • JJ on August 16, 2016 at 3:49 am

Brian, you are an angel ! Many thanks for allowing me to convince my friends I am not hallucinating! After trying to convince others last night, I checked this website again to see if there were any replies and hallelujah! Your post appeared! Always wondered if it was a band like Flying Circus but Giselle did not sound like an appropriate title for such a song. I logged straight into Utube to hear it and turned cartwheels! I can now sleep easy!!Thank you so much! JJ

For anyone who wants a challenge.
My brother is hoping to find a song he heard back in the early 70’s, sung by a band he cant remember. His only recollection of the song is that it tells of a family losing a son to either a car accident or to suicide. It starts off as a narrative before going into the song. Sorry it’s not a lot to go on, but it is a challenge.
The band is all males….he thinks. He did eliminate Jon English.
Many thanks for all who reply

    • brian pounsett on August 17, 2016 at 2:35 pm

Hi Di only one I remember is “Take me Back” by Noiseworks, its about someone driving of and dying but also mentions no body cares so could be suicide or car accident, so that one fits the criteria but it was out in 1987 not the 70’s so maybe not the one?

    • GeeTee on August 18, 2016 at 2:02 pm

Hang on a sec! Surely it’s not Tell Laura I Love Her. It begins with a “narrative” and involves a guy named Tommy dying in a car crash. It was originally released in 1960 but the version I know is this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GKuJtLIYdU) from 1974 by Johnny T. Angel. Could it be???

    • Brian on July 4, 2017 at 9:33 pm

There was a song late 60’s early 70’s by a Sydney group had a one and only called ” No roses for Michael ” drug overdose/suicide

    • PBG on July 5, 2017 at 11:25 am

Di, as Brian has already mentioned the song is very likely to be “No Roses for Michael”. It was sung by Greg Anderson and you can point your brother to the following clip on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t48Y2VPw69c

      I hope this helps.

      cheers! Paul

The First Class were a studio band. The lead singer was also the lead singer of Edisons Lighthouse on their hit, “Love Grows Where My Rosemarie Goes.”
3XY in Melbourne changed the lyrics for a local promo in 1974. The first line went, “You remember a hot Melbourne day, wo-o-oh, and everybody drove a hot FJ wo-o- oh

Can anyone help? I would love to learn the title and artists who put together a short collection of songs for children. The songs included Captain Crumplepeg, Little Miss Sorrow Child of Tomorrow and Little One. The record came with an illustrated hardcover book and lyrics.

do you recall a band named Freshwater possibly early seventies.
    female singer possibly Carol ?
The only time I saw them or heard them was on a Australian music show my sister used to watch when I was a kid.
I think the song I heard was something about a man in a grey suit.

  30. Debbie on June 8, 2015 at 9:04 am

Hi, I wonder if anyone can remember a song from very early 70’s, I think it was called ‘The Feather’ by either James Franciscus or Franciscus Henry. It had flute music and the words “like a feather it blows along the ground”. It just keeps popping into my head.
    Cheers

    • GeeTee on June 10, 2015 at 8:27 am

It was probably Franciscus Henri who released a few folk albums in the early 70s before becoming mainly a children’s entertainer. See info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franciscus_Henri

There are links to his albums which list the names of the songs. I can’t see a song named “The Feather” but my guess is that this is your guy.

James Franciscus was an American actor.

  31. Debbie on June 11, 2015 at 8:14 am

Another random question. Does anyone remember a song from early 70’s, I think, named “Rosie”. I think it was an Australian band, lead singer had dark longish hair. Boppy little tune. I remember seeing/hearing it on one of the early 70’s music tv shows.
    Thanks

the song is Tabatha Cristella by an Adelaide band called The Society ( I think, without digging up the single) rare and hard to find, but I still have the single, it goes,I wanna live by Tabatha Crystella, Tabatha ya ya I love her so, she means everything to me, yer Tabatha I love you so, it was sort of a country ditty with bango and only charted in Adelaide. It’s not on youtube

Hi, I have the Australian soundtrack “Naturally Free”, which consists of 3 artists, Justice, Avenue and The Squeeze. Other than The Squeeze did the other bands put out their own albums?

    • Paul B. Guy on March 29, 2017 at 9:24 am

Though it is not a definitive source, rateyourmusic.com lists one album by Squeeze called “The Squeeze is On” released 1977 as well as a single called “Sweet, Sweet Lady / Song for Someone” in 1976. Note that the band were referred to as Australian Squeeze in some countries (just like the English band Squeeze were known here as U.K. Squeeze).

Avenue only had the single “Leave Me to Dream / Naturally Free” in 1975.

There are no listings for Justice.

Looking for a song i had on an old 45 back in the mid to late 60’s.. i cannot remember the name of the song, but i think it was called Seagull or seagulls.. it was like a anti gun protest type of song.

Some of the words i remember were ..’There’s a big man with a gun and he’s having lots of fun’ and you hear the sound boom , boom , boom representing a gun shooting at birds…
i think it was an Australian artist.

  40. The Duke on July 21, 2017 at 8:53 am

Can anyone remember a song from 1970 or 71 I think. Sure it’s an Aussie band. The only words I can remember are from the Chorus. I got my love to keep me warm.
Heard a piece of it when flicking through radio stations late one night about 15 years ago.

Also have been looking for a song by John Phillips that was released in Brisbane before Christmas in the early 70s. Not listed anywhere in his record lists that I can find. It was a balady rock kind of song singing about people forgetting religion at Christmas. In his words – but had forgotten what the man had said.
Then bit further talks about remembering the story of Christmas and in his words – and when you do that you’ll find where its at.
Not much I know but please help. As a teenager I bought a cassette player in 1971 with my first pay. It had a microphone attached and I used to record songs direct from my transistor. Had so many songs was so sad when the tapes had had their day.
Thanks for any help you can give me

  41. Sally on October 20, 2017 at 10:50 pm

I remember a song, might have been a country pop rock. I’m sure it was either two if not three sisters singing, around 1973 to 1977?? The chorus was kind of “wavy”, I’m sure it was an Australian song and singers. I can hear the tune in my head and some of the lyrics, it kind of reminded me of that song afternoon delight, but that’s not the song. Im sure I remember hearing the song and it was during summer. Sorry about the dodgy info! Thanks though.

    • Paul B. Guy on October 21, 2017 at 9:27 am

      Hi Sally,

Wavy? That’s not much to go on but to me itsounds like it might have been the Moir Sisters “Good Morning, How Are You?” from 1974.

Here’s a link to it on YouTube:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-HTnFtkUVI

Even if it’s not the song you’re thinking of it’s still a damn fine slice of 1974 Australian music.

      cheers!

      Paul

    • Dits on October 21, 2017 at 10:00 am

Hey Sally, was it the Moir Sisters 1974 with ‘Good morning how are you?’ Sounds a bit like ‘Afternoon delight’
If it is, it can be found on youtube.

Hi there. I heard a song that might of been a Pop/Easy Listening tune from around the late 60s early 70s era sung with female vocals. It had violins (I think) played in it that swung in a happy and carefree way. I vaguely heard the refrain sung in the last part of the song I heard as (holiday/ Hollywood) (rose/Road/home), Iā€™ve searched those supposed lyrics but nothing came up. Any help would be appreciated.

  43. Rob on July 14, 2018 at 12:42 pm

    Hi.
I just found this site and i am astounded by the musical knowledge and willingness to help others which leads me to this request for help identifying a song i heard in Newcastle NSW in the mid 1970’s.
The chorus went something like this. ” Deeper and deeper i go, into the dream world i know”

    • Sam on November 24, 2018 at 8:08 pm

Actually I should clarify from memory I would describe the song as a pure pop tune but with a string arrangements throughout the whole song that is cheerful, innocent and bouncy that I would say is very similar to the chorus of The Supremes song ā€˜You Canā€™t Hurry Loveā€™ and Neil Youngā€™s ā€˜Comes a Timeā€™. I would say the range of the time the song came out would be from the mid sixties to early seventies. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this.

      • Sam on November 25, 2018 at 4:45 pm

Update: After misremembering what the song sounded like for years I actually stumbled upon the song I was looking for and it was ā€˜Tie a Yellow Ribbon ā€˜round the Ole Oak Treeā€™ by Dawn and Tony Orlando.

    • Jeff on May 3, 2019 at 2:16 am

Hi Margie. Blackfeather were formed in Sydney and released ‘Seasons of Change’ in 1971. It featured Flute midway through the song. It charted across Australia. Their biggest hit was ‘Boppin the Blues’ the next year.

O rit could have been Fraternity’s version of Seasons of Change with Bon Scott playing the flute.

      Hi Gail,

In my earlier response I didn’t actually reply to you so I apologise for repeating my post again but I wanted to ensure you got my response.

The song was titled ā€œMothers and Fathersā€ by Jonne Sands (so you very nearly had it). It entered the charts in September 1968 and reached number 23.

Hereā€™s a link to the song on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4nAuvliOBY

If you want a physical copy, the song is available on the CD “Move Baby Move : Australian Pop Of The 60’s Volume 2” which you can purchase at JB Hi-Fi, Sanity etc.

      Enjoy!

I’m after the name of the Adelaide singer / group who had chart success with the song Hootch. It would’ve been from the early seventies. Lyrics included ‘Drink up all your bottle of hootch and don’t save any for tomorrow’. It was an anti-war song. I remember seeing the song performed live on the local rock show The Move, hosted by Vince Lovegrove, in the North Adelaide studios of TV station NWS 9. Thanks.

Guys my mum is desperately trying to find a song from the 70ā€™s that was only released in Australia (Weā€™re from the U.K. and the neighbour from Australia gave them the lp). It was sang by a man (possibly guy group) and the lyrics she remembers are – ā€œwhen youā€™re near to me, your hand in mine, we have realised what love could findā€. And ā€œI know you like me, Iā€™ve seen it in your eyes. The look of love, keeps shining through those cloudy skiesā€ please please please help me find this xx

Hi All, I have been haunted by this song for decades. It was released in 1970 and was to be called I’ll be gone, but Spectrum beat them to it. The lyrics go something like this– listen to me baby, put your little head back, I’ve got a lot to tell you, before I walk the track— her’s my warning, in the morning, I’ll be gone. It is Aussie and sounds a lot like a Zoot style. Hoping someone can ease my mind, Cheers, David.

    • David H on October 15, 2020 at 3:20 pm

Unbelievable, I went back through previous posts and found a bloke named Pete after the same song in July, 2016. Answered by GEETEE and it is I’ll be gone by an Aussie group called Lotus. I can vaguely recall them but this 65 year old mind is a bit worn out. Anyway it’s on to spotify and download. All the best to everyone, especially to those in lockdown in Vic. Cheers and beers, David.

    Hi all,
Here’s a challenge for you. I have in my head an instrumental that I remember from the 1970s that made it into the charts (I’m 99% sure it was featured on the show Countdown – the hosts always seemed somewhat embarrassed when an instrumental made it into the charts šŸ™‚ ) Of course, there are no lyrics, being an instrumental, which is mostly why I can’t seem to find out the identity of this piece, though I have scoured as many online sources as I can. All I can do is try to describe it to you. The opening bars start slowly with a twangy electric guitar and remind one of dawn in the Aussie bush. Then it gets a background beat going and livens up, including some feature playing with tin whistle or piccolo. Without the background beat, the melody motto could remind you of a national anthem of some sort. There are multiple instruments that take a turn at the melody, and it is very pleasant to listen to – slightly lilting, slightly haunting, yet very uplifting, joyous and symphony-like in the middle. It winds down fairly grandly at the end, slowing up with a definite ending chord like an orchestral piece would – not a fade-out ending. I realise this description sounds rather cryptic (obviously it’s harder to describe an instrumental than a song with lyrics), but I thought that being an instrumental that made it into the Aussie charts would make it easy to find. I can’t say that it reached number one, but I feel certain it got into the top ten / twenty. Can anyone help? Thanks!
