Aussie Musicians Passing in 2012
The Roll Of Honour for 2012 is a distinguished one indeed. It includes many great Australian musicians that had careers that spanned decades.
This year we lost musicians who figured in such notable bands as the Divinyls, Sherbet, The Joy Boys, Zoot and Men at Work to name a few.
Please let me know in the comments below if there is anyone that I’ve left off the list and I’ll fix it.
Clive Shakespeare died on the 15th of February 2012 aged 62. Clive was guitarist in Sherbet from 1969 to 1976. | |
Ian Turpie died on the 11th of March 2012 aged 68. Despite being know mostly for hosting TV shows, Ian had an early career as a pop star & musician and took over from Johnny O’Keefe as compere of Sing, Sing, Sing on the ABC. | |
Vince Lovegrove died on the 24th of March 2012. Vince was the singer in two successful bands, The Valentines with Bon Scott and the Mount Lofty Rangers with other notable musicians, Jimmy Barnes, Glenn Shorrock & John Swan. Vince also managed the Divinyls from 1981 – 1987 and had success as a journalist & writer. | |
Jimmy Little died on the 2nd of April 2012. Jimmy had a career that spanned six decades and he was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 1999. | |
Jimmy Niven died on the 9th of April 2012. Jimmy was a brilliant keyboard player who was a member of two popular Australian bands, the Pink Finks and The Sports | |
Greg Ham died on the 19th of April 2012. Greg was a long time member of, and songwriter with, Men At Work. | |
Edith Bliss died on the 3rd of May 2012 aged 52. Edith had a solo career in the late 1970’s before becoming a presenter on Simon Townsend’s Wonder World. | |
Robin Gibb died on the 20th of May 2012. Robin was a member of the Bee Gee’s since his childhood. As they all were, he was a talented singer and songwriter. | |
Daryl Cotton died on the 27th of July 2012 aged 62. Daryl was singer for the band Zoot along with Rick Springfield and Beeb Birtles. He spent many years hosting kid’s TV shows and had success in recent years with Cotton, Keays and Morris. | |
John Bogie died on the 27th of August 2012 aged 77. John was the drummer for The Joy Boys from 1958 to 1969. | |
Alex Lakejev died on the 20th of September 2012. Alex was the keyboard player for Sydney band Outline. |
Pyramid Of The Coyote singer Gary Cornell collapsed and died on stage from a heart attack on 17th of March 2012.
Chocolate Starfish guitarist Zoran Romic died from Non-Hodgkins lymphoma on 31st of March 2012.
German-born Australian classical composer Felix Werder on 3rd of May 2012, aged 91.
Wild Cherries guitarist & Python Lee Jackson vocalist Mal McGee died on 17th of May 2012.
Crowded House drummer Peter Jones died of brain cancer on 18th of May 2012.
Jazz composer and pianist Graeme Bell died of a stroke on 13th of June 2012.
Pink Finks bass player Geoff Ratz died on 26th of June 2012.
Black Knight singer and bass player Wayne Knight died on 14th of July 2012.
Singer Del Juliana died on 28th of August 2012.
British-born entertainer Max Bygraves, died at a nursing home on Hope Island, Queensland on the 31st of August 2012.
Tully multi-intrumentalist Richard Lockwood died from cancer, on the 21st of September 2012.
American-born blues singer Wiley Reed, died in Queensland on 7th of October 2012.
Entertainment publicist Suzie Howie died from cancer on 25th of October 2012.
Purple Hearts and Coloured Balls vocalist Mick Hadley died on 26th of October 2012.
