“Jet are truly sorry to inform our fans that we have had to cancel our performance supporting Jimmy Barnes at the Hordern Pavilion tonight, due to an unexpected illness within the band. The nature of the illness is such that unfortunately we have a band member who was admitted to hospital last night, and is continuing to receive treatment. His health is our number one priority right now. We are extremely excited and honoured to be touring with Jimmy, and are gutted that we can’t be on stage tonight. We apologise to our fans and to Jimmy for not being able to play for you tonight, and thank you all for your understanding. Love, Jet”
Diesel & Jimmy Barnes
I’ve filmed and photographed Diesel a few times now. AT the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival (Windsor) as well as With Jimmy at The Enmore Theatre for; “The One For The Road”-Benefit, for the Death of production manager, Shane Cooper, and the injury of drummer Mick Skelton, in a car accident while on their way to a Thirsty Merc gig. Also; down at Macabe park for the Yours & Owls Festival which included (Jimmy Barnes, Daryl Braithwaite, Ian Moss, Diesel & Mental As Anything. It was at this festival I asked Jimmy backstage, would I be able to Photograph the Barking Spiders gig a few days later. He asked for my details and handed them on to the tour manager. A few days later I was told I could do the show with (Barking Spiders (Cold Chisel) at the Enmore Theatre.
When I heard that Jimmy was playing at The Hordern Pavilion, (a venue I hadn’t been to since my 20’s when I saw Status Quo) I wrote again to see if could photograph it. Again, they wrote back saying I could. It’s such a privilege when I have the chance to do these venues that are iconic in the music industry. Two of my close friends (John & Janine) also had tickets so I went with them. The Hordern isn’t quite the same as I remember it. Major upgrades inside. I arrived early and went to the front of the stage to find out when and where I had to go.
Karen Lee Andrews with her band was playing. I only heard a few songs but she sounded great. She was very humble about being a nobody and playing at The Hordern in front of Diesel and Jimmy Barnes. She finished and I went to the front of the stage. Have to contact her to film/photograph the band.
Diesel
Lee Maloney on Drums, Richie Vez on Bass
Diesel came on about 15 minutes later with his customary Gretsch guitar with Tremolo. Diesel plays with a variety of effects with a lot of delay. As Jimmy stated later when Diesel joined him for a song, that he is always writing songs and is a prolific songwriter. It was a short song list but the songs were all extended out, especially Tip of My Tongue. I’ve always admired Mark (Diesel) since I first heard of him in 1987 (Johnny Diesel & the Injectors) and then when he started playing with Jimmy. He has this hard-playing style and is always hammering the Guitar. Has a unique singing voice too. The crowd knew all the songs and sang along. He’s such a charismatic musician.
Man Alive is another favourite song of mine as well as Come to Me.
“Diesel was hired to work on Barnes’ third solo album, Freight Train Heart. When Jimmy Barnes took to the road to tour the album in November, Diesel was retained as lead guitarist, while Johnny Diesel & the Injectors were the opening act. It was the beginning of a long relationship between Diesel and Barnes, who would later become brothers In law after Diesel married Jep (Jane Barnes’ sister) in 1989”.

Jimmy Barnes
Jackie James Barnes on Drums, Clayton Doley on Organ, Lachlan Doley on Piano, Ben Rodgers and Danny Spencer on guitars, Michael Hegerty on Bass, Mahalia Barnes, EJ Barnes, Elly-May Barnes and Jane Barnes on backing vocals and Dougie McFarland on Bagpipes.
It was a packed Hordern as the band and Jimmy came onstage. A Deafening roar from the crowd. I had taken two lenses with me but one wouldn’t work so I had to use the Nikon 70-200 for the 3 songs allocated for photographers. It’s one reason I have no photographs of the entire band. Jimmy is such a great performer. Has a great smile (every time he smiled I noticed a row of girls at the front smiled back) and I am sure his voice these day is much more powerful than it’s ever been Jimmy seems more relaxed & happier these days (just my opinion).
I guess-after baring his soul to Australia in those revealing docos on his early life and subsequent early band life he feels much more comfortable performing these days. The entire band are so talented Musicians and his new album My Criminal Record was featured all night will many Cold Chisel and other hits from his past Including when he introduced Diesel back onto the stage for; “If Time Is on My Side” (with Diesel). They have such a close connection on stage.
He sang hit after hit. The newer music is really good. Shutting Down Our Town is one of my favourite new songs by Jimmy. Just a heartfelt song about what is really happening all over Australia, towns closing, businesses going broke when a major business closes. The heartache for those remaining face. Just a great Australian song. I’ve found the past decade, I have started to really enjoy Jimmy as an outstanding Performer/Musician all over again as he reinvents his music.
“Shutting Down Our Town by Jimmy Barnes was released on 26/4/2019. From the Studio Album; “My Criminal Record”..
It wasn’t until I was on FB asking who was in the band I realised that Jackie James Barnes was on Drums. As his Cymbals covered his face for the entire night and there were no lights on the drum kit I couldn’t take photos of him. His Drumming is always a world-class performance.
Clayton Doley on Organ, Lachlan Doley on Piano are Amazing Musicians. So much power in their playing. I’ve filmed/photographed them both and always left impressed by their playing, and who both possesses outstanding technical ability -just a virtuoso pair.
Mahalia Barnes, EJ Barnes, Elly-May Barnes and Jane Barnes on backing vocals have very good harmonies. Both times I have seen them perform they always give all they have got. Michael Hegerty the Bass Player and both Ben Rodgers and Danny Spencer on guitars are also top class musicians that keep the mood going all night.
Jimmy sings all his songs with passion. He really gives a great show and as we know just about every song he played, (except for a few from the new album-but that will change as we hear them more.) the crowd joined in on most of them. In between singing, Jimmy always looks around the crowd-even though the lights are blinding and every now and then you see his trademark smile as he connects with the crowd. With Cold Chisel reforming for a 2020 National tour Jimmy’s voice is as good as it has ever been and those shows will all be sold out. I hope to photograph at least one of those shows.
Shutting Down Our Town Lyrics
This used to be a place where a man could find some work
Put together Holdens or a foundry job at worst
I can hear the noises coming from the Karawara deep into the night
The roads were filled with kids playing after dark
Sent to get their fathers who were sitting at the bar
Eat, sleep, work, drink, that’s all they ever didOh, they’re shutting down our town
They’re cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our town
Oh, they’re shutting down our town
I started raising hell before I came of age
Running from my past with clenched fists of rage
And I fought my way through every other day, never looking back
And everything I knew was back there on those streets
Every lesson…Oh, they’re shutting down our town
They’re cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our town
Oh, they’re shutting down our town
Oh they’re shutting down our town
They’re tearing out its heart
It wasn’t much to look at from the very start
Herded all together
From many different lands
The old folks stand around
While they’re shutting down our town
Yeah, they’re shutting down our town
They’re shutting down our town
And I finally came back home, found some peace at last
Was time to stop running from the demons of my past
Some that I remember but the rest are changing way too fast
Yeah, they’re shutting down our town
They’re cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our townOh, they’re shutting down our town

They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our town
