Johnny O’Keefe’s “She’s My Baby” – A Double Chart-Topper

Johnny O’Keefe, Australia’s first rock and roll star, made history in 1960 with his smash hit “She’s My Baby.” Released through Leedon Records, this track didn’t just climb to number one—it became a cultural touchstone for Australian music.
“She’s My Baby” first charted on January 9th, 1960, before reaching the top spot on February 20th, 1960. It held onto number one for six weeks and stayed in the charts for an incredible 21 weeks overall. The song replaced “Boom Boom Baby” by Crash Craddock at number one, and in a twist of fate, was later dethroned by the same track.
But the story doesn’t end there. Almost a decade later, in 1969, “She’s My Baby” made a comeback. Re-released to a new audience, it climbed back into the top twenty, proving the timeless appeal of Johnny O’Keefe’s music.
More than just a hit, the song cemented O’Keefe’s status as the face of Australian rock and roll. His electric stage presence and pioneering spirit inspired generations of musicians and helped lay the foundation for the Australian music industry as we know it today.
