Dave Owens II Musician/Songwriter/Producer

dave owens

I first began to play music outside my house at around age fourteen as part of my musical education at BoysTown Engadine, N.S.W during my years of internship there (1973 -1975).
While we practiced twice a week, we also marched and performed on Special Days and competed at National and State level Brass Band Competitions. One year I even got a bus trip to that years’ Salesian Eucharistic Festival (1974) in Melbourne as one of 3 tuba players in “The BoysTown Brass Band” playing popular tunes and military marches and well from there, once I’d completed 4th form (Year 10), it was “Jayel” & “Presence” (1976 –1979) and endless touring with “Mad Gorilla” (1980 -1982), and then much the same with “Trader” in (1983 – 1985), until the “The Icemen” (1986), This was interrupted by my move to Melbourne mid-way thru 1986.

By the end of August of 1986 I had joined “Dirty Pool” (1986 – 1987) and we quickly became part of the ‘party band/pub band’ circuit until family commitments forced key members off the road 18 months later; and so in 1988, an opportunity too good to refuse came up to join the infamous street-level good-time party band “Jerry, James & The Chocolate Factory” (1988 – 1990). From there I worked with and played in country folk festivals and hotels with “ The Freak Brothers”(1993) and ”The Two Balding Drunken Smiley Weird Guys” (1993-1994). Then along came stints with “East West” (1994), “ The Curly Merkins” (1994), “The Blues Troubadours” (1995)-1996), and the “D.O.B.” (1997) which in time turned into “The Troubadours”. (1997-1999) in which the founding members, Paul Cooper, Winston Galea (and me), essentially became the backing band for my first (independently produced) album “One Pair Of Hands “ (DO 001) , which was released in 2000.

“In My Shoes” (DO 003) followed in 2004, spawning the hit single “Richmond” (DO 004)
and the video clips “Richmond”, “Run Outa Time”, “In My Shoes”, and “Sometimes Everything”; all independently directed & produced. Late in 2002 I produced an official
bootleg of the last line-up of The Troubadours at their residency at the time “The Troubadours Live At The Armadillo 2002” (DO 002). In 2006, I produced “WhatiswillbE” (DO 005) and it’s supporting video single “Late At Night” while I embarked on an inner city “Acoustic Rampage “ Tour, which was filmed – and used in part – for some of the bonus DVD footage that accompanies the hard copy version of my 2012 release “Nowhere Near The End” (DO 006).
All 4 studio albums ( DO 001, 003, 005, 006 ) are available for download from itunes.

These days I do occasional acoustic gigs as well as sit in with colleagues from time to time all over the place on bass and guitar. I also have a mail order business (P.O.Box 691 Northcote.
3070 Vic. Australia) for my recordings, limited edition EP’s, DVD’s, and stuff.

Is there another album on the way ? . . . . you betcha !

Good onya mate! Great shots. I remember that photo of Gorilla at Boppy Mountain like it was yesterday. And the Boys Town band is a classic. Is Spiro back row right? And Pete Kekel back row middle?

Nah…Peter is Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by now and I’m sure back. 🙂 Hopefully in the front row by now…

Hey Guys, how’s it hanging? Apart from the photo bringing back some good times, I’m really impressed with Dave’s resume 🙂

Hi Dave, I last saw you at a Jerry James & chocolate factory gig held at a remote country hall at Mollonghip in the cold country west of Melbourne . It was winter 1998. Not sure if you might remember or not but the band was cookin (as were us punters) and played well into the wee hours of the morn.
I contact you because I have uncovered video footage of the gig which I took all those years ago. There is quite a bit of the band as well as other “interesting characters” . I have had it copied from VHS to DVD and the sound and vision, in parts, is not too bad (lighting was minimal).

Let me know if you are interested in it.
    Cheers

    Pete timms.

thanks for that DVD Pete, & thanks for making the effort to find me. much appreciated.
I also remember the night being super cold as well. (Take note of my 18ply turtle neck jumper I’m wearing!!
(Who wears a woolly jumper onstage while they’re playing?)
I recently re-organised my library & found the footage you sent me. So I watched it again. . . .and loved the band’s audio, the snippets of footage during the early part of the film – is excellent. Tight, funky, yet loose & flexible. . . . and the sequences of live footage is superb – a band in full flight – confident & assured. . . .
and those opening scenes of the ‘production meeting’ in the side room . . . . my goodness . . .
So (belatedly) thank you for all your trouble in sending me a copy Pete. A real true collectors item.
I’m at the Gold Coast these days (It’s much warmer than Mollinghip)
so drop an email at davejrowens@gmail.com
      Best Regards, D.O.

Hey Dave, loved reading this history. I was the rhythm guitarist in Jerry James and the Chocolate Factory prior to you joining the band. We appeared on Hey Hey It’s Saturday’s Red Faces segment in 1987 and manged to win, receiving a score of 5 from Red Symons! (Have never been able to find the footage on the internet though.) Do you know what became of Gerry Collard? He was an amazing guitarist and quite a character. I still have the demo cassette he recorded with his ‘No Shame’ band at Richmond Recorders in 1986.
