Supernaut
Supernaut hit the scene in a big way with their first ever single “I Like It Both Ways” becoming an almost instant hit. Originally formed in Perth around 1974, they took the step of moving to Melbourne early in their career to seek their fortune. Coming to the attention of Molly Meldrum certainly helped and he produced their first album & made sure they were featured on Countdown.
They created quite a bit of talk with their sexually ambiguous lyrics & glam look but that was short lived and even seemed to work against them in the end. Supernaut eventually relocated again, this time to Sydney, and tried to re-invent themselves in a Punk/New Wave style, changing their name to “The Nauts”.
The band recorded one album under that name in 1978 but despite critical acclaim it didn’t sell well & they disbanded in 1980.

I still keep in touch with Roberta and we, like you fondly remember days at Acme! Supernaut was mentioned on FB the other day so it made me go down memory lane. I hope you’re keeping well and happy and that life is being kind! Xx
Old thread, I know, but if any of you Supernaut guys happen by, would be great if you could clarify something for me.
I saw Supernaut in Perth after you had released ‘I Like It Both Ways’ – would have been 1976, or early 77 at latest. The gig was at His Majestys theatre, I think – or if not, maybe the Perth Concert Hall?
Wherever, it was somewhere in the city area with rows of seats that was not a usual rock concert setting. Do you recall where this was? I have a friend who was too young to attend any Supernaut gigs back then, and he is a fan – he is interested in identfying this venue I saw you play at, and so am I! So, if you can help…
Cheers
Hi Rolanstein
It was the Perth Concert Hall. They did two gigs there at the end of each of two small tours of WA (one to Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross and Northam , the other to Busselton, Bunbury and Mandurah).
The reason I know this is I played bass guitar with Stud, the support band for the tours (and the Concert Hall gigs). Great fun!
Hey Jim, I was at the gig, I also remember you in Copper Mist Kewdale Primary…doing those D.Purple covers…Can u please give Ur brother Mark my details? Thanks 0456 725 672
Thanks, Jim. After my comment above, I did manage to connect with Gary Twinn through FB, and he confirmed it was the Perth Concert Hall.
I saw most bands in Perth in those days, but only vaguely remember Stud as a name. Must have seen you at the Supernaut gig, but no recollection of that at all. What sort of stuff did you do, and where else did you play?
Also, my sense is that Supernaut were supporting a headline act from over East or maybe overseas at the Perth Concert Hall gig I attended. Can you cast any light on this, by any chance? Or are you certain Supernaut were the headliners?
Do you recall whether any bands other than Stud were supporting? I seem to recall there were at least 3 on the bill.
Cheers!
